The Return Journey for the One

“Darling, you are good.”

The spiritual path for the One, and the One in all of us, is Surrender and Serenity. This is because the One exemplifies how we all resist and try to control reality. We think things are wrong and need fixing, including ourselves.

Now that you have explored One you have a deeper understanding of what this resistance really means for this type. At the level of unhealthy personality, it means becoming uptight, critical of self and others, overly responsible and focused on “error”. 

In one way the return journey is a reversal of what we have seen as increasing constriction. Moving back up the levels of health and disidentifying with the self-images and patterns of the personality. This reverse journey is true for all types. This is why we practice presence and gentle awareness- just noticing how we constrict will loosen patterns.

We can look at every element of the personality structure from the perspective of loosening, relaxing, disidentifying, expanding awareness. The Enneagram also points to specific ways to counter our personality patterns.

When they are healthy, Ones understand that they aren’t responsible for fixing everything and can live with “good enough” as a standard. They have a wisdom that comes through- they have their values and sense of purpose but in a human more forgiving way. It’s ok to make mistakes. They relax because they know that they are not “bad”.

Healing message for a One - “You are good”

The Virtue of One is Serenity in the sense of accepting reality as it is, letting go of the sense of personal responsibility to fix what they perceive as wrong.

The Line of Integration on the Enneagram for One is to Seven. Type Seven holds the energy of spontaneous, fun-loving playfulness for the One. It is the shadow aspect of themselves that the One needs to reclaim.

The Stress Line to Four is a place where One feels their emotions and their rigid self-control cracks.

The Centers of Intelligence tell us the One is in the Gut or Instinctive Center. Ones repress their gut instincts and their anger to be “good”. Contacting their Belly and sensing their anger without trying to control it is healing.

The Inner Critic Message can be witnessed as the voice that is running the show and felt in the body, until we bring awareness and distance ourselves from it. For the One this means really noticing how, according to their personality structure, they are only ok if they “do what is right”- and how impossible this is.

We can also access the essence of our type directly when we practice presence. Reminded that they are tuned into Perfection and that their soul loves goodness, Ones can “go for the gold” by simply being present to the perfection that is the nature of reality, the goodness that is in the universe. They can rest from all their efforts to be good and create goodness, recognizing it is not their job, “Let Go and Let God”. Surrendering to what is and finding Serenity.
