Essence of Type Nine – Peace, Harmony, All Is One
Imagine that we each come from one of nine lands, the land where the essential quality to which we are sensitive reigns supreme. For Nines this land is one of peace, harmony, and the sense that “all is one.”
Type Nine is called the “Peacemaker.” In their souls, Nines are sensitive to peace and harmony, and they feel a mystical sense of “oneness”- that everything in the universe is interconnected. Above all, Nines want to live in a land of peace and harmony, where there is no separation.
To enter Nine Land, imagine a Garden of Eden where everything is calm and harmonious, where every being is naturally gentle, where there is no separation and no conflict, where peace reigns. You know that you too are part of a web of interconnection and your soul is at peace.
To understand the experience of Nines in the world, imagine the “fall” from this Garden of peace, harmony and interconnection, the impact of encountering conflict and division everywhere, of being born into a world where people fight and hate each other. For type Nine, expulsion from Paradise feels like being cast into a world of war and separation.
Understanding The Essence of “All Is One”
We can all relate quite easily to the ideal of peace and harmony - we know what it is like to feel at peace or for things to be in a sweet state of harmony. The idea of “Oneness”, or “All is One,” sounds more esoteric, but most of us have probably sensed this too. When we are very present, perhaps in meditation, a sacred space or in nature, we may sense our boundaries soften and feel our awareness grow beyond ourselves. We say our consciousness expands - we have an expansive sense beyond our bodies or our normal identity. Our separate drop of water merges in the ocean. This is also called non-dual awareness.
In ordinary awareness, we experience ourselves as subjects and everything else as objects of our perception. Subject-object perception begins at a very early stage of childhood development when we first learn that we are separate beings. For example, a child of nine months will cry when mommy leaves the room because of this new awareness of separateness. Before this differentiation between self and other, as infants, we exist in a merged state with our mothers or caregivers and don’t realize we are separate beings. This is why infants can be passed around between people and they do not react. Perhaps this oceanic feeling exists in the womb, where we all began.
As our personality or identity necessarily becomes more solid in life, we lose touch with what we originally knew as this open, boundaryless state. In the denseness of ordinary perception, everything outside of ourselves, including other people, hardens into an object. Our sense of ourselves becomes solid and separate.
Nines somehow “remember” the original state of merged Oneness and are sensitive to the loss of this connection. In their essence, Nines know that there is a unity, and a consciousness where we know we are not separate, we are a drop in the ocean. The Nine sensitivity to peace and harmony is rooted in this original awareness.
While it may be a faint memory of our infant state, or even our souls before birth, “All is One” is also a truth about the nature of reality. We live in a universe where everything is interconnected, and the idea of Oneness has been contemplated since very early times. Italian philosopher Giordano Bruno, who was burned at the stake for his ideas, wrote in 1584 that “every soul and spirit hath a certain continuity with the spirit of the universe... Anything we take in the universe, because it has in itself that which is All in All, includes in its own way the entire soul of the world, which is entirely in any part of it.”
It’s interesting that this concept was intuited before it could be understood scientifically. Quantum physics is now confirming that everything is connected at the quantum level. In his 2011 memoir, Life Itself: How I Believe in God, Roger Ebert described quantum reality in words we can all understand: “Entangled objects somehow communicate instantaneously at a distance. If that is true, distance has no meaning. Light-years have no meaning. Space has no meaning. In a sense, the entangled objects are not even communicating. They are the same thing. At the “quantum level” (and I don’t know what that means), everything may be actually or theoretically linked. All is one. Sun, moon, stars, rain, you, me, everything. All one.”
So, the essence of “all one thing” seems to be the very nature of the universe, true scientifically, although very mysterious. Perhaps this interconnection is what we tune into when our consciousness expands. This is the “All Is One” essence that Nines are sensitive to, that feels present to them when there is peace and harmony. Nines know that we are interconnected, not separate, that we belong to a harmonious field, and that this field has a lovely, peaceful quality.
